Conscious sedation at High Dental Implants Melbourne

At High Dental Implants Melbourne, we understand that some patients may find the thought of visiting the dentist daunting and that it may even cause anxiety. We want you to know that you are not alone in this and that dental phobias are a real fear that a lot of people suffer from. But with our conscious sedation methods, we can leave you feeling calm and relaxed before we start any procedure.  We hope to instill a feeling of trust and ease in all our patients, phobic or not, so that our practice is a place where you know you will be well taken care of.conscious-sedation

What is conscious sedation?

As the name suggests, you will be sedated but still slightly conscious. Unlike with general anesthesia – which knocks you out completely – conscious sedation keeps you just on the edge of sleep; you will be able to communicate but feel completely and utterly relaxed and pain-free, almost euphoric even. We do this so that your body lets go of its anxieties and we can work on you without any risks of a phobia taking control of your thoughts and causing you to erupt in panicked confusion. This drowsy state is said to sometimes leave your body tingle in the extremities which is completely normal and nothing to worry about, at High Dental Implants Melbourne, our chief concern when it comes to sedation is keeping your mental health intact and your emotions calm so that we can properly take care of your oral health.

Types of sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation – This type of sedation is offered through a drip and you will be given a constant feed of medication throughout your procedure to keep you calm and relaxed.

Inhalation sedation – We understand that sometimes dental phobias may extend to anything to do with needles and the thought of an IV is out for the question for you. In this case, we can offer you our happy gas that will leave you sedated and happy as feelings of peace and relaxation wash over you while we are treating your dental issue.

Are there side effects?

Side effects are common but not necessarily serious, the obvious one is feelings of drowsiness that you cannot control but this will not cause you to panic, only to relax. You may have a case of mild amnesia when it comes to remembering the procedure as you drift along the line of unconsciousness for most of it and your reflexes will certainly be made slower for the time you are sedated. Because the sedation isn’t full anesthetic, patients usually quickly bounce back once the medication is lifted and stops flowing into their system. This can take anywhere from 30min to one hour before you will be released to go home and it is advised that you take the rest of the day off work and physical activity in order to recover properly. It may sometimes leave you with a slight headache or feelings of nausea but this should abate fairly quickly at High Dental Implants Melbourne.
