A guide to having a dental implant Melbourne fitted

When it comes to restoring lost teeth, there are few procedures that top oral implants.dental-implants-melbourne

Fitted to the jaw, they can last up to 15 years or more with the correct dental care and give you back your bite strength.

At High Dental Implants Melbourne, we will always aim to fit a dental implant Melbourne for our patients if we can and if it’s suitable to do so. By doing this we help restore our patient’s smile.

But what is involved in having oral implants fitted?

Here is a simplified guide to what you can expect when our team fits a dental implant Melbourne.

The initial consultation

This is the most important stage of the entire process because here we assess your suitability to have a dental implant Melbourne.

This will typically involve x-rays to examine the condition of your jaws, detailed medical history to rule out any contraindicated illnesses or medications and, of course, we will need to assess your gums and teeth.

If we are good to go, our team will then book you in for the fitting. If we identify an issue, we will discuss fitting a different restorative, like dentures or a bridge.

The fitting

The fitting of oral implants may sound intimidating, but it is rather straightforward.

Our team will use a local anaesthetic to numb the gum line where the implants are to be fitted. Once the site is numb, we will make some incisions and gently peel the gum back to expose the bone. We may drill a new hole into the gum line or, if you lost your tooth recently, use the already present socket.

Once the implant is fitted, we will close the gum line around the implant with stitches and boom! The fitting is completed! Over the next 3-6 months, the implants should fuse with your bone and we will then prepare to fit the prosthetics.

Prosthetics: tooth, bridges or dentures

When it comes to prosthetics and how you want them to look, the sky’s the limit!

If you want a complete set of dentures fitted, we can make them in any shade you desire; so, you can finally have that Hollywood smile! Alternatively, if you are having a bridge or even a single crown fitted, our team can create one that blends in so seamlessly with your teeth that, after a while, you may not be able to tell the prosthetics apart from your natural teeth.

The fitting of prosthetics is usually completed within one appointment so, you can leave our surgery with a brand new smile!

Aftercare

Once your implants have been fitted, you will need to be careful when you get home!

For one thing, we recommend avoiding overly spicy foods as they can aggravate the gums, so cut back on curry for a while! It is also advisable to eat softer foods; harder foods can cause your newly fitted implants to move or even fall out. So, for at least 7 days post-fitting, stick to boiled vegetables, fruits, soups and easy to bite/chew foods.

We also recommend cutting back on alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking as these can delay the healing process.
